According to the Maryland Department of Planning, Maryland had a population of about 5.5 million in July of 2003.  The bulk of those people live in Anne Arundel County (506,000), Baltimore City (628,000), Baltimore County (777,000), Harford County (232,000), Howard County (264,000), Frederick County (213,000), Montgomery County (918,000) and Prince George's County (838,000).  Source:  U.S. Bureau of the Census, Population Estimates Branch.  For more information, see the Maryland Dept. of Planning's State Data Center.
Many people, including Realtors, are unaware that Howard County has no incorporated towns.  Columbia is actually a very large planned homeowners' association.  The other most significant post office addresses in Howard County are Elkridge, Ellicott City, Clarksville, Fulton, Dayton, Jessup, northern Laurel, Glenelg, Glenwood, Highland, Marriottsville and West Friendship.  Anne Arundel County has only two incorporated municipalities and only one (Annapolis) is significant in size.  The other most significant post office addresses for Anne Arundel County are Severna Park, Arnold, Pasadena, Odenton, Gambrills, Severn, Ft. Meade, Millersville, Crofton, Mayo, Shady Side, Harwood, Edgewater, Riva, Glen Burnie, Brooklyn and Pasadena.

Basic Facts on the Home Styles in Maryland

Homes in Maryland can be divided into condominiums, townhomes (or rowhomes), duplexes and, of course, detached units.  In Maryland, condominiums are actually two things:  ownership of the space within the four walls of the individual unit and ownership of exterior spaces, shared in common with other condominium owners.  Townhomes (also called rowhomes in Maryland) are rows of two or three story buildings sharing common walls between them.  Duplexes are like townhomes, except that there are only two homes in a row, such that each unit is an end unit.

The most common style of detached home in Maryland is the colonial style, which features a two-story design.  Unlike contemporary homes, which can be a wide range of shapes, colonials are typically more symmetrical and traditional in design.  Also frequently seen in Maryland, cape cods are more symmetrical than contemporary homes and have dormer windows on the second floor, which may feel like a converted attic.  Ramblers, also called ranchers, are only one story in height.  Split levels are recognizable because the level of one side of the home is a half a story higher than the other side.  Not to be confused with split levels, are split entries.  The distinguishing feature of a split entry is an entry foyer that is half a level above one story of the house and half a level below the other story of the house.
